When you are working with a website, there are many things you can do to increase your rankings for your target keywords. A few of these small changes can mean a huge difference in your site’s position in Google and other search engines. It’s important when you have a new site to identify possible problems and get them fixed right away. If Google scans your site and indexes it with the problems present, even if you fix the problems right away, it could be months before Google comes back to scan your site again and update its index to reflect your changes.

These quick fixes should make a significant difference, depending on how serious they are. These changes should take you less than an hour and don’t take any special technical knowledge to accomplish. The first thing you want to do is see if your website is indexed in Google. If your site is not indexed, it means that Google does not know about it and people are not going to find your site when searching for things. To check if your site is indexed in Google, simply go to Google.com and type in the following:

site:domain.com

Leave off the WWW and just type your domain name in. If your site was gooberpie.com, type in site:gooberpie.com and Google will return a result if your site is in their index. That’s it, quick and easy. Google will return every page on your site that it has indexed. This is really useful to see if your page is able to be found by search engine users. If your page is indexed, it could be ranking for certain keywords. If your site is not indexed, you have some options. You can wait a week and see if Google has found your site, or you can take a more aggressive stance and do something about it. You can go to social bookmark sites such as digg.com, folkd.com, mixx.com and others and create a social bookmark linking to your site. Google indexes sites like these and will find your link and hopefully follow it to your site and index it. This may take some time, but it will get you indexed.

You will want to look at some keyword tools and pick out a good keyword to attempt to rank for. When I say good keyword, I mean something that people are searching for a lot. Once you have found this keyword, make sure that there are not more than 200,000 phrase results in Google for it. You can check this by putting the ” character around your keyword. If your keyword was apples, you would type “apples” into Google. You can target higher than 200,000 result keywords, but it will take a lot longer to rank for.

Once you have picked out a keyword, make you’re the title tags on your page contain the exact keyword in the right order. Make sure you have your exact keyword in the META description tag along with a good short description of what’s on the page. This is what will come up when people see your site as a result of their search. Also make sure to have your keyword throughout the content on your page. Don’t just use the exact keyword, but use variations too so that Google can get an idea of what the page is about.

Do these things and you should be ranking higher than ever for your target keywords. Along with a good off site SEO strategy, you should be dominating the top 10 before long.
