Protecting My Clients From Rarely-Searched Keyphrases
A while back, a new client handed me a list of search terms she wanted to be found for.
I did my usual RESEARCH to assess if those search terms were “do-able”. That’s my term for… can I get this site onto page one of Google for these particular key phrases?
So I examined the strength of the competition and yes, these keyphrases were indeed do-able. I felt I could get her onto page 1 for her chosen search terms.
Not too long afterwards, she was indeed on page one for most of her terms. And that was good news. She was elated. I was delighted.
But as time went on, those top search engine listings did not turn into significantly increased traffic or sales.
Why not?
That’s when I checked the SEARCH VOLUME for these keywords. That is, how many times each month were those terms actually searched for in Google? (Google publishes those figures but sorry, I dont have the equivalent figures from the other major search engines.)

A Popular Website Mistake That’s Easy To Fix
Let’s talk about one of the more “popular” mistakes that I see being made with business websites owned by “Mom and Pop” type businesses. And how to fix it.
The mistake is to get the page title wrong. And it’s so easy to fix.
Firstly, what do I mean by the title? It’s the text that appears in the blue bar at the very top of your screen. It is controlled by a simple little piece of HTML code that looks like this:
<title>Home</title>
You can see the HTML code for any webpage by right clicking over any blank part of the page and then clicking on “View source” or similar words, depending on which browser you are using.
Your webmaster can easily change the text that appears there, between what’s called the opening and closing title tags.

Search Volume: Finding Out How Often Your Keywords Are Searched For
As a follow-up to my earlier post on protecting clients from selecting rarely searched key phrases, let me give you the quick way to find how many searches there are each month for whatever term you’re considering.
Let’s take hypnotherapy as an example. The reason that’s on my mind is that I’m now helping Sarah Joy with her new hypnotherapy website, http://SarahJoyHypnotherapy.com.
Sarah is a clinical hypnotherapist with a decade’s experience in the profession. She used to live and practice in the UK but has recently moved to Western Australia and now practices in Kalamunda, near Perth.
While helping Sarah, one of the questions I wanted answers for was… Which is the best term to use to describe her work? – hypnotherapy or hypnotherapist? They are very close, and both are accurate, but as it turned out these have two quite different search volumes.

Using Keywords in Domain Names – Does It Help?
How important is it to use some of your keywords in your domain name?
One way to check that is to look at who turns up on page one of Google for any search term. And since we happen to have a carpet cleaner in here at the moment, let’s use “carpet cleaning” as an example. Now you might be thinking, who searches for the term carpet cleaning without adding the name of their city or suburb?
Good point.
So let’s do that.
Here are the search results for “carpet cleaning sydney” (which is where I live) . We could have used one of the local suburbs, but Sydney will do for now.

How Will You Get My Site Onto Page 1 Of Google?
“How will you get my site onto page 1 of Google? Specifically what do you do?”
Today there are LOTS of ways of getting to the top of Google’s search results, even apart from pay per click. The good news is… the time-tested and proven Internet Marketing methods (which we use) still work — AND THEY WORK WELL.
Methods like…
* identifying the BEST search terms for your market — the words that your potential customers are typing into Google while hunting for your products or your service
* using these keywords and key phrases in the right places on your website (keyword placement and keyword proximity) and with the right frequency (keyword density though this is less important these days)
* providing sufficient relevant quality content at your website — and also in articles that publicize your site
* using an optimized internal linking structure between the pages of your site so that Google’s “spiders” can quickly discover all the public pages on your site — otherwise they cannot index them in their search database. Spiders are robot computers that constantly traverse the web looking for new content
* title tags, heading tags, alt tags, and meta tags (but don’t worry if you’ve never heard of these)
* optimizing your website to conform to Google’s webmaster guidelines and
* a collection of other on-page and off-page SEO strategies that all help deliver the desired results (that is, your site on the front page of Google) ASAP.
But I’ve left the BIGGEST till last…
* One of the major factors in getting your site onto page 1 is BACKLINKS… the number of sites where articles about your business are published, as well as the quality of those sites which link to your site.
* While Google does not reveal the detailed inner workings of its algorithm, there is no doubt that getting links to your site from other good quality sites that you don’t own (on different IP addresses to yours) is a huge key to getting a top search engine listing.

3 weeks later I’m on the front page of Google

Having your site on Google page one versus being on page 2. Does it matter? How much better is page one anyway?
